Recommend a village/market town 2 hrs from London
Thinking of driving out on Sunday with the missus to a nice village or market town no further than a 2 hr drive from London. Must have some nice pubs for lunch and shops or markets to have a look around.

Does anyone have any recommendations? Been looking around the South Downs but nothing's jumped out at me yet.

Obliged.

Was going to recommend staying at the sun inn (Dedham) probably fully booked this weekend I'd imagine, like most decent inns/hotels.. sod that driving out for a day business, make a weekend of it.

If you're talking East Anglia, north of Ipswich you have Woodbridge, Orford, Framlingham are worth a visit, lots of nice places to eat. If you can be arsed driving up to the North Norfolk coastline, that's lovely.

In north Essex there's a lovely walk from Flatford to Dedham village (constable country)

Lavenham is lovely, but most of the villages and market towns around north essex and suffolk are.

Sometimes good just to head up towards cambridge but take the bury st edmunds turn off, then look for the "tourist route to southwold" brown signs. There are some outstanding places on that route and it is a beautiful drive. Southwold is often called Saffron Walden-On-Sea. (By people from Saffron Walden)

Can't go far wrong with Marlow or Henley,

Marlow has good places to eat - The Coach, Tom Kerridge, it is always busy, but very good food, followed by a stroll down by the river.

Stoat has nailed this. Bourton on the water takes some beating.

Henley is lovely as well. With the added bonus of me being there on Sunday.

How about Farnborough/Aldershot. Plenty of nice Nepalese curry houses if that's your thing, and take in a bit of plane spotting at the airport!!
Good "spoons/Goose" in Aldershot town centre for your Mrs!!

I just looked at how far it is from Dennington, mates got a superb restaurant there, 30 miles probably to far to go for lunch/dinner.
Saying that i drive there from KENT!
